What happens at your first visit?
Patient Guide to understanding the procedure and helpful information on aftercare

Please read through these guidelines prior to your procedure. You can print this document if you wish, but
Dr. Truter's office will also provide you with a physical copy of the information after your consultation.

Purpose of the First Visit
Your first visit is primarily a diagnostic consultation. The goal is to understand your symptoms, confirm the diagnosis, and determine the most appropriate next steps.

History and Discussion
We will review your symptoms, bowel habits, medications (including blood thinners), and any previous treatments. Not all rectal symptoms are caused by hemorrhoids, and careful assessment is important.

Physical Examination
You can expect a rectal examination. This is a routine, professional, and usually quick procedure. You will lie on your left side with appropriate covering to maintain privacy. The examination is rarely painful.

If pain is encountered, we become concerned about conditions such as an anal fissure. In that situation, we may limit or avoid internal examination to prevent discomfort.

Rigid Sigmoidoscopy
In most cases, a rigid sigmoidoscopy is performed to visualize internal hemorrhoids and the lower rectum. This is brief and does not require sedation. If a painful condition such as a fissure is identified, this step may be deferred.

Assistance During the Examination
During examinations and procedures, a female medical assistant is normally present to help with the procedure. This ensures that examinations are not conducted with only one person present and allows care to be provided safely and professionally.
If you have any concerns or questions during the examination, please feel free to raise them at any time. We are always happy to discuss how best to proceed.

Treatment Planning
Treatment is rarely performed at the first visit. Once the diagnosis is clear, we will discuss conservative options and, if needed, plan an office-based procedure and arrange a booking for future appointment.

**Failure to attend your booked procedure without adequate notice may result in a $75.00 charge.
