Perianal Skin Tag Removal
Patient Information Sheet

What Are Perianal Skin Tags?
Perianal skin tags are folds of excess skin around the anus. A common misconception is that all
skin tags are external hemorrhoids. While some skin tags represent the remnant of a previous external
hemorrhoid, many are simply redundant skin.

Why Do Patients Request Removal?
Skin tags can be irritating, difficult to keep clean, or cosmetically unacceptable. For these
reasons, many patients ask about removal.

How Is Skin Tag Removal Performed?
Removal is a common office-based procedure performed under local anesthetic. Injection of
local anesthetic into the skin tag can be uncomfortable for a few seconds. Once numb, the skin
tag is removed. Occasionally, additional anesthetic is required. Most patients are satisfied immediately after the procedure itself.

Important Information About Recovery
Although the procedure is technically straightforward, recovery can be significant. The incision is
made on the anus, which is difficult to rest or protect. Following surgery, the anal muscles often
go into spasm, which can result in significant pain lasting days to weeks, and occasionally up to
six weeks. Pain medication is provided to help manage these symptoms
.

Aftercare and Time Off Work
Patients are advised to stay close to a bathroom, wash gently with water after bowel
movements, and apply ice packs for approximately one week.  Some patients require up to two
weeks off work and may experience discomfort during bowel movements for several weeks.

How Many Skin Tags Are Removed?
Many patients have more than one skin tag.   We are cautious about removing more than one or
two at a time, as the anus is a mobile structure that needs to open normally.  Removing too much tissue at once
may increase the risk of anal narrowing (stenosis).

Red Flag Symptoms
Red flag symptoms are discussed in detail before proceeding with surgery and include severe or
worsening
pain, fever or chills, increasing swelling, persistent bleeding, or difficulty passing stool or gas.
