 Post-Banding After Care

You have undergone rubber band ligation of internal hemorrhoids today. This is a safe and effective outpatient procedure designed to treat internal hemorrhoids by cutting off their blood supply, leading to shrinkage and sloughing of the tissue within 7-10 days.

What to Expect:

  • Mild discomfort or pressure in the rectum for several days is normal.

  • Minor rectal bleeding may occur, especially when the banded hemorrhoid sloughs off (typically around day 7-10).

  • Passage of the band in the stool is normal and does not require action.

Some patients experience no discomfort at all, while others may feel moderate pressure.

Follow-up

  • Multiple sessions are often necessary to achieve optimal symptom control.

Pain Management

  • You may use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or an NSAID (e.g. Ibuprofen, unless contraindicated) if discomfort occurs.

  • Avoid opioid medications if possible, as they may cause constipation

Dietary Recommendations

  • Increase fiber intake (whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fiber supplements such as psyllium)

  • Maintain adequate fluid intake (8-10 glasses of water per day)

  • Avoid straining during bowel movements

  • You may use a stool softener if needed (e.g. Docusate sodium)
