Post-Banding After Care
You have undergone rubber band ligation of internal hemorrhoids today. This is a safe and effective outpatient procedure designed to treat internal hemorrhoids by cutting off their blood supply, leading to shrinkage and sloughing of the tissue within 7-10 days.
What to Expect:
-
Mild discomfort or pressure in the rectum for several days is normal.
-
Minor rectal bleeding may occur, especially when the banded hemorrhoid sloughs off (typically around day 7-10).
-
Passage of the band in the stool is normal and does not require action.
Some patients experience no discomfort at all, while others may feel moderate pressure.
Follow-up
-
Multiple sessions are often necessary to achieve optimal symptom control.
Pain Management
-
You may use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or an NSAID (e.g. Ibuprofen, unless contraindicated) if discomfort occurs.
-
Avoid opioid medications if possible, as they may cause constipation
Dietary Recommendations
-
Increase fiber intake (whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fiber supplements such as psyllium)
-
Maintain adequate fluid intake (8-10 glasses of water per day)
-
Avoid straining during bowel movements
-
You may use a stool softener if needed (e.g. Docusate sodium)
