Perianal Hygiene & Skin Care

Simple steps to reduce irritation, itching, moisture, and discomfort

Many patients with hemorrhoids, skin tags, fissures, or other perianal conditions experience irritation, itching, moisture, or difficulty keeping the area clean. Fortunately, simple changes to your daily routine can often make a significant difference.

Keep the Area Clean – Gently

The skin around the anus is delicate and can become irritated by excessive cleaning.

We recommend:

  • Cleaning with warm water whenever possible.

  • Avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing.

  • Pat the area dry rather than rubbing.

A Bidet Is Highly Recommended

For patients who struggle with hygiene, a bidet is one of the most effective long-term solutions.

Benefits include:

  • Gentle cleaning with water.

  • Less need for wiping.

  • Reduced irritation.

  • Improved hygiene, particularly in patients with skin tags or hemorrhoids.

If purchasing a new bidet, models with a warm air drying function are particularly helpful, as keeping the area dry is important for healthy skin.

Soap

Soap is often unnecessary.

If soap is preferred, use only a mild, fragrance-free soap, such as unscented Dove®, which is gentle and close to the skin's natural pH.

Avoid:

  • Perfumed soaps

  • Antibacterial soaps

  • Bubble baths

  • Scented body washes

These frequently cause irritation.

Wipes

Baby wipes and hemorrhoid wipes may seem helpful but can sometimes worsen irritation.

Many contain:

  • Fragrances

  • Alcohol

  • Preservatives

These ingredients may trigger itching or inflammation.

If wipes are needed while travelling, choose unscented, alcohol-free wipes and use them only occasionally rather than as part of your regular hygiene routine.

Keep the Area Dry

Moisture is one of the common causes of persistent irritation.

Simple measures include:

  • Pat the area dry after washing.

  • Use the drying function on a bidet if available.

  • Wear breathable cotton underwear.

  • Change out of damp clothing promptly after exercise.

As dermatologists often say:

"If it's wet, dry it."

Keeping the skin dry helps reduce irritation and itching.

Creams

Many over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams should not be used for prolonged periods.

Some contain steroid medications that may thin the skin if used repeatedly.

Barrier creams may occasionally be recommended in selected patients, but routine use of multiple creams is usually unnecessary.

If symptoms persist, seek medical advice before trying additional products.

Skin Tags

Perianal skin tags are common and are usually harmless.

However, they may:

  • Make cleaning more difficult.

  • Trap small amounts of stool or moisture.

  • Contribute to irritation or itching.

Improving hygiene is often sufficient to control symptoms. Occasionally, symptomatic skin tags can be removed if they continue to cause significant problems.

When Should You Seek Medical Advice?

Please arrange a review if you experience:

  • Persistent pain

  • Increasing swelling

  • Ongoing bleeding

  • Persistent itching despite good hygiene

  • Drainage or discharge

  • A new lump around the anus

These symptoms may require further assessment.

Lastly:

Simple daily habits often provide the greatest improvement.

✔ Clean gently with water whenever possible.

✔ Avoid excessive wiping.

✔ Keep the area dry.

✔ Avoid scented products.

✔ Use creams sparingly.

✔ Consider a bidet if hygiene remains difficult.

Small changes can make a big difference in long-term comfort.
