Anal Skin Tag Post Excision Care

Keep the area as clean as possible. Shower or have a sitz bath several times during the day, and especially after a bowel movement. Dry the area gently but thoroughly. You may use a blow dryer on a low setting to achieve this. 

 

Use the pain medication prescribed on a regular schedule. Be aware that some prescription medication pain relievers are constipating.  Have a laxative such as Metamucil, Resoralax or Senokot-S (for short-term use only) available to maintain ease of stool passage. Also increase your fluid intake. If your pain is mild to moderate, you can substitute with Tylenol extra strength x 2 tabs with the addition of Ibuprofen 200 mg 1-2 tabs. (Do not exceed 4000mg of Tylenol or 1200 mg of Ibuprofen in a 24 hour period. This is often an effective combination.  

 

Avoid the use of hot tubs, pools, lakes or saunas for 2-3 weeks after procedure. 

 

You may experience a small amount of bleeding after the procedure. You can tuck either gauze or a pad into the area. It is also normal to have some swelling in the area. Use a gel pack wrapped in a cloth and tuck between your buttocks. This can be done frequently throughout the day. 

 

Avoid spicy food for two weeks post excision.

 

The sutures are dissolvable and do not require removal.

 

During the healing process, you may notice a whitish line form where the skin tag was removed. This is often mistaken for an infection bus IS A NORMAL CONSEQUENCE OF THE EXCISION. 

 

In the RARE instance you experience spasms that prevent you from urinating, take a warm bath to relax the muscles. This should allow you to pass urine.
